What Is Bipolar Disorder?
Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder defined by episodes of mania or hypomania and, usually, episodes of depression. During a manic episode, a person may feel euphoric or extremely irritable, need little sleep, talk rapidly, take big risks, and feel invincible. Depressive episodes bring low mood, exhaustion, hopelessness, and sometimes suicidal thoughts. Between episodes, mood may return to normal.
Bipolar I involves at least one full manic episode, which can be severe enough to require hospitalization. Bipolar II involves hypomania, a milder form of elevated mood, alternating with major depression, and is often misdiagnosed as depression alone. Cyclothymia involves milder but chronic mood swings. Because the right treatment depends on the right diagnosis, our psychiatric evaluation is thorough and looks carefully at mood history, family history, and any substance use.

- Needing very little sleep without feeling tired
- Racing thoughts and rapid, pressured speech
- Impulsive spending, risky driving, or reckless decisions
- Grandiose beliefs or inflated self-confidence

- Loss of interest in activities and withdrawal from people
- Difficulty concentrating or completing tasks
- Mood changes that strain work, finances, or relationships
- Using alcohol or drugs during highs or lows

How We Treat Bipolar Disorder at Forrest Behavioral Health
Bipolar disorder responds best to a combination of medication and therapy delivered consistently over time. After a full psychiatric evaluation, your care team builds a plan that stabilizes mood, teaches you to recognize early warning signs, and supports the routines that keep episodes at bay.
Day Treatment Program (PHP)
Our day treatment program provides structured, full-day care five days a week for people whose bipolar disorder is severe enough that weekly therapy is not enough, but who do not need overnight hospitalization. Clients attend group and individual therapy, psychiatric care, and skills training, then return home each evening.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
The intensive outpatient program meets several times a week for about three hours per session. It is a strong fit for moderate symptoms, for stepping down from day treatment, or for anyone who needs more support than a single weekly appointment. An evening IOP is available for clients who work or attend school during the day.
Outpatient Therapy
Our standard outpatient program offers individual and group therapy once or twice a week to maintain progress, prevent relapse, and continue building coping skills after a higher level of care.
Psychiatric Care and Medication Management
Mood stabilizers, certain antipsychotics, and carefully chosen antidepressants are the foundation of bipolar treatment. Our psychiatric providers prescribe and monitor medication closely, adjust dosing as needed, and coordinate with your therapist so that medication and therapy support each other.
Evidence-Based Therapies
Cognitive behavioral therapy helps you manage the thoughts and behaviors that accompany mood episodes. Psychoeducation teaches you and your family how the illness works and how to spot warning signs. Interpersonal and social rhythm therapy focuses on stabilizing sleep and daily routines, which has a direct effect on mood. DBT skills help with impulsivity and emotional intensity.
Dual Diagnosis Treatment
Many people with bipolar disorder also use alcohol or drugs to cope, which ultimately makes things worse. Our dual diagnosis program treats bipolar disorder and substance use at the same time, by the same team, rather than sending you to two separate providers.
Frequently Asked Questions About Bipolar Disorder Treatment
Is bipolar disorder the same as mood swings?
No. Everyone has mood changes, but bipolar episodes last days to weeks, involve clear changes in sleep, energy, and behavior, and cause real problems at work, at home, or with money. A psychiatric evaluation can tell the difference.
Can bipolar disorder be treated without medication?
Medication is usually essential for preventing manic and depressive episodes, and stopping it is the most common reason for relapse. Therapy makes medication more effective and helps with the parts of the illness that medication does not address. Our team works with you to find a regimen you can live with.
Can family members be involved in treatment?
Yes, and we encourage it. Family therapy and psychoeducation help loved ones understand the illness, support treatment, and recognize early warning signs of an episode.
Does insurance cover bipolar disorder treatment in Illinois?
Most major insurance plans cover outpatient mental health treatment, including PHP and IOP. We accept many commercial plans and will verify your benefits for free before you commit to anything. Self-pay options and financial assistance are also available.
Can I keep working while in treatment?
Yes. Our evening IOP and standard outpatient options are designed for people who need to keep their work or school schedule. Day treatment is more intensive, and our team can provide documentation for short-term leave if needed.

Other Programs
Outpatient Program (OP)
The outpatient program at our rehab is tailored to those who have completed higher levels of care or require a less intensive treatment approach due to their stage in recovery. During standard outpatient treatment, clients engage in therapy sessions once or twice a week, focusing on maintaining sobriety, strengthening coping mechanisms, and continuing personal growth in recovery. This flexible program is designed to support clients as they navigate the challenges of everyday life, providing ongoing support and resources while allowing them to fulfill their personal, professional, and family commitments. It’s an ideal solution for long-term recovery management, offering a supportive network and professional guidance as clients build a fulfilling, sober life.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
Our intensive outpatient program is designed for individuals who need more support than standard outpatient treatment but have a stable living situation that supports their recovery journey. An intensive outpatient program involves attending therapy sessions and group meetings several times a week, often during evenings or weekends, to accommodate work or school schedules. This level of care allows clients to integrate real-world experiences into their treatment, applying learned skills in daily life while maintaining a strong connection to support and guidance. The focus is on developing personal accountability, understanding the root causes of addiction, and building a sustainable recovery plan.
