OCD Treatment in Naperville, IL

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is far more than a preference for order. It is a cycle of unwanted, intrusive thoughts and the repetitive behaviors or mental rituals a person feels driven to perform to relieve the anxiety those thoughts create. OCD can consume hours each day and is often hidden out of shame, but it is highly treatable with specialized therapy.

Forrest Behavioral Health provides outpatient OCD treatment in Naperville, Illinois, using exposure and response prevention and other evidence-based approaches. Our day treatment, intensive outpatient, evening, and outpatient programs serve adults across Aurora, Lisle, Wheaton, Bolingbrook, Downers Grove, and the western suburbs.

What Is OCD?

Obsessive-compulsive disorder involves obsessions, which are persistent, unwanted thoughts, images, or urges that cause intense anxiety, and compulsions, which are behaviors or mental acts performed to reduce that anxiety or prevent something bad from happening. The relief is temporary, so the cycle repeats, and over time the rituals grow. OCD affects roughly one in forty adults and typically begins in adolescence or early adulthood.

OCD takes many forms beyond the stereotypes. Common themes include contamination and cleaning, checking and doubt, symmetry and ordering, taboo or violent intrusive thoughts, relationship doubts, and scrupulosity. Some people have mostly mental compulsions, such as reviewing, counting, or seeking reassurance, with few visible rituals. Because OCD is frequently misdiagnosed as generalized anxiety or depression, our assessment specifically screens for it.

How We Treat OCD at Forrest Behavioral Health

OCD does not respond well to general talk therapy. It requires specific, structured treatment. After a thorough evaluation, your care team matches you to the right level of care and builds a plan around the approaches with the strongest evidence for OCD.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)

ERP is the gold-standard therapy for OCD. With your therapist’s guidance, you gradually face the situations or thoughts that trigger obsessions while resisting the compulsion that usually follows. Over time, the brain learns that the anxiety passes on its own and that the feared outcome does not occur. ERP is challenging but highly effective, and it is built into every level of care we offer.

Day Treatment Program (PHP)

Our day treatment program provides structured, full-day care five days a week for people whose OCD is severe enough that weekly therapy is not enough, but who do not need overnight hospitalization. Clients attend group and individual therapy, psychiatric care, and skills training, then return home each evening.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

The intensive outpatient program meets several times a week for about three hours per session. It is a strong fit for moderate symptoms, for stepping down from day treatment, or for anyone who needs more support than a single weekly appointment. An evening IOP is available for clients who work or attend school during the day.

Outpatient Therapy

Our standard outpatient program offers individual and group therapy once or twice a week to maintain progress, prevent relapse, and continue building coping skills after a higher level of care.

Psychiatric Care and Medication Management

SSRIs, often at higher doses than used for depression, can meaningfully reduce OCD symptoms and make ERP easier to engage in. Our psychiatric providers evaluate whether medication is appropriate and coordinate closely with your therapist.

Treating Co-Occurring Conditions

OCD commonly occurs alongside depression, anxiety disorders, tic disorders, and substance use. Our integrated team, including our dual diagnosis program, treats the whole picture rather than one condition at a time.

Frequently Asked Questions About OCD Treatment

I have disturbing intrusive thoughts. Does that mean I am dangerous?

No. Intrusive thoughts in OCD are unwanted and the opposite of what the person values, which is exactly why they cause so much distress. Having them is not a sign of intent, and treating them is a routine part of OCD care.

Is ERP really necessary? Can I just talk about it?

Talk therapy alone rarely reduces OCD, and seeking reassurance can make it worse. ERP is the treatment with the strongest evidence, and our therapists pace it carefully so it is manageable.

How long does OCD treatment take?

Many people see meaningful improvement within twelve to twenty ERP sessions, and intensive programs can compress that timeline. Ongoing maintenance helps keep symptoms from returning.

Does insurance cover OCD treatment in Illinois?

Most major insurance plans cover outpatient mental health treatment, including PHP and IOP. We accept many commercial plans and will verify your benefits for free before you commit to anything. Self-pay options and financial assistance are also available.

Can I keep working while in treatment?

Yes. Our evening IOP and standard outpatient options are designed for people who need to keep their work or school schedule. Day treatment is more intensive, and our team can provide documentation for short-term leave if needed.

Other Programs

Outpatient Program (OP)

The outpatient program at our rehab is tailored to those who have completed higher levels of care or require a less intensive treatment approach due to their stage in recovery. During standard outpatient treatment, clients engage in therapy sessions once or twice a week, focusing on maintaining sobriety, strengthening coping mechanisms, and continuing personal growth in recovery. This flexible program is designed to support clients as they navigate the challenges of everyday life, providing ongoing support and resources while allowing them to fulfill their personal, professional, and family commitments. It’s an ideal solution for long-term recovery management, offering a supportive network and professional guidance as clients build a fulfilling, sober life.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Our intensive outpatient program is designed for individuals who need more support than standard outpatient treatment but have a stable living situation that supports their recovery journey. An intensive outpatient program involves attending therapy sessions and group meetings several times a week, often during evenings or weekends, to accommodate work or school schedules. This level of care allows clients to integrate real-world experiences into their treatment, applying learned skills in daily life while maintaining a strong connection to support and guidance. The focus is on developing personal accountability, understanding the root causes of addiction, and building a sustainable recovery plan.
